Hardness Tester Supplies

  1. Rockwell Test Blocks
    1. Rockwell hardness testing is a fast and inexpensive test. The simplicity in the operation of a Rockwell hardness testing machine provides the added advantage that Rockwell hardness testing does not generally require a highly-skilled operator to perform. The test is useful for material selection, for process and quality control, and for acceptance testing of commercial products. Rockwell hardness scales are divided into two categories: regular Rockwell scales and superficial Rockwell scales. Both categories of tests use the same types of indenters

    1. The regular Rockwell hardness testing scales use heavier force (load) levels. For these scales, the preliminary force (minor load) level is 10 kgf and the standard total force (load) levels may be 60 kgf, 100 kgf or 150 kgf. The superficial Rockwell hardness testing scales use lighter force (load) levels, typically for use on thinner materials. For the superficial Rockwell scales, the preliminary force (load) level is 3 kgf and the standard total force (load) levels may be 15 kgf, 30 kgf or 45 kgf.

    1. The Rockwell hardness test method consists of indenting the test material with a diamond cone or hardened steel ball indenter. The indenter is forced into the test material under a preliminary minor load F0 (Fig. 1A) usually 10 kgf. When equilibrium has been reached, an indicating device, which follows the movements of the indenter and so responds to changes in depth of penetration of the indenter is set to a datum position. While the preliminary minor load is still applied an additional major load is applied with resulting increase in penetration (Fig. 1B). When equilibrium has again been reach, the additional major load is removed but the preliminary minor load is still maintained. Removal of the additional major load allows a partial recovery, so reducing the depth of penetration (Fig. 1C). The permanent increase in depth of penetration, resulting from the application and removal of the additional major load is used to calculate the Rockwell hardness number.

  1. Brinell Test Blocks

  1. Brinell Test Blocks is used to calibrate portable, bench and production Brinell hardness testers. Each Brinell test block is heat treated in a computer-controlled vacuum heat treat furnace to insure maximum consistency and repeatability. They are then blanched; ground, hand lapped and diamond polished providing you with impressions that are easy to read with precision accuracy.
  2. Brinell test blocks are calibrated with five impressions and certified in accordance to ASTM E-10 and ISO 6506 on hardness testers calibrated and traceable to NIST. The arithmetic mean of the five impressions is inscribed on the block both in BHN Hardness and diameter in millimeters. Each test block is calibrated with Tungsten carbide indenters. HB30 designates 3000 kg / 10 mm ball - the most common Brinell scale, HB5 designates 500 kg /10 mm ball and HB15 designates 1500 kg / 10 mm ball.
  3. Final inspection of Brinell test blocks are performed in our state of the art ISO 17025 accredited laboratories. All test blocks are manufactured in accordance with the latest ASTM E10 Brinell revisions. Each test block comes with a long form certificate of calibration verifying the readings and that the test measurement equipment used was calibrated and traceable to NIST.
